Staten Island Chuck

Staten Island Chuck, also referred to more formally as Charles G. Hogg, is a groundhog who resides in the Staten Island Zoo in Staten Island, New York in the United States. He is noted as the official groundhog meteorologist of New York City who predicts the duration of winter each February 2 on Groundhog Day. He makes the prediction based on whether or not he sees his shadow at 7:30 A.M. on Groundhog Day. The ceremony at the zoo is often attended and officiated by the Mayor of New York City.

The Staten Island Zoo claims that Chuck has correctly predicted the duration of winter 80% of the time since the 1980s (in natural circumstances a groundhog could never live more than 10 years or so).

On Saturday, February 2, 2008, Staten Island Chuck predicted an early spring.[1]

He did not see his shadow in 2009, either, so once again Chuck is predicting that spring will be early this year, in contrast to Punxsutawney Phil's prediction of six more weeks of winter. In this notorious prediction, Chuck bit mayor Michael Bloomberg during the ceremony.[2]

How to Make a Shrinky Dink Groundhog for Groundhog's Day

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Shrinky dink sheet
  • Pencil crayons
  • Scissors
  • Baking sheet
  • Oven
Step1
Buy shrinky dink paper at the Shrinky Dink Store (see Resources).
Step2
Unwrap your shrinky dink package and remove one sheet. Turn it so that the rough side is facing you.
Step3
Use a brown pencil crayon to draw an outline of the groundhog. Make the groundhog larger than you actually want him so that you can make up for the shrinking that is going to take place.
Step4
Finish coloring in the groundhog with your pencil crayons.
Step5
Cut the groundhog out with a pair of scissors. Leave a clear edge around the groundhog so that it has room to shrink.
Step6
Set your groundhog on a baking sheet.
Step7
Set your oven knob to 325 degrees. Wait for it to heat up before continuing.
Step8
Stick the baking sheet in the oven for sixty seconds and then quickly remove.
Step9
Give the groundhog time to cool off before you play with it.
