Punxsutawney is a borough in Jefferson County, Pennsylvania, 84 miles (129 km) northeast of Pittsburgh. In 1907, Punxsutawney and Claysville boroughs were consolidated and incorporated as Greater Punxsutawney. A high-grade soft coal was mined in the surrounding region. Formerly, the manufactories included glassworks, foundries, ironworks, machine shops, and planing, flour, feed, and silk mills. In 1900, 6,746 people lived there; in 1910, 9,058; in 1920, 10,311; and in 1940, 9,482 people lived there. The population was 6,271 at the 2000 census.
Punxsutawney's most famous resident is Punxsutawney Phil, a groundhog said to predict the weather annually on Groundhog Day (February 2). Phil, and the town were the basis for the 1993 hit comedy film Groundhog Day (although nearly all of the movie itself was shot in Woodstock, Illinois).

How to Sew a Groundhog Costume
Instructions
Difficulty: Moderately EasyThings You’ll Need:
- Old pair of sweat pants and shirt
- Brown poster board
- Red construction paper
- Black eye pencil or face paint, red or pink blush or face paint
- Stapler
- Brown felt or fake fur material
- Brown thread
- Elastic for the waist and wrist
- Scissors
- Straight pins
- Sewing machine
Find an old pair of sweat pants and a sweat shirt that are one size too big. Take them apart at the seams with a seam ripper. This will be your pattern for the groundhog costume.
Step2
Measure the new pattern to see how many yards of new material you'll need. Be sure to add a half a yard to allow for seam allowances.
Step3
Buy brown felt or brown faux fur material. Buy brown thread to match the material.
Step4
Pin and cut the material by folding it lengthwise. Place the pieces of the pattern on the material and pin the pieces so they don't move. Cut an inch out from the edge of the pattern for the seam allowances.
Step5
Sew the pieces together by following the old sweat pants and shirt seams. Sew a seam around the armhole attaching the sleeve to the top, with the right sides together.
Step6
Make the groundhog ears by cutting out two circles brown poster board, 4 inches in diameter and 2 circles out of the red construction paper, 2 inches in diameter. Staple the red circles to the brown circles and staple to a brown strip of poster board that fits around your head.
Step7
Add the finishing touches to the costume by drawing whiskers on either side of your nose with black eyeliner or face paint, and painting the tip of your nose with pink or red blush or face paint.
